Artistically illustrated picture bible in two volumes. First edition by Doré in French. Page decorations by H. Giaconelli.

Gustave Doré (1832 - 1883) was a French artist and sculptor - a master of wood engraving . With his multitude of illustrations, he became one of history's most prominent illustrators.
Dore produced hundreds of different woodcuts that illustrated biblical narratives from the Old Testament and the New Testament, all of which was rich in detail. The dramatic content of biblical stories fit perfectly with his Romantic style. In his works he often depicts sprawling landscapes with emotional content, all typical of France during the 19th century.

The vivid illustrations of Doré were a refreshing change from the dominating styles and mediums of past centuries.
With the success of the Bible illustrations, as well as other well-loved works, he left a lasting legacy in Western art history.

The Bible is part of the Tønnevold Bible Collection at the Nordic Bible and Book Museum.
